Bay Area Updates: Fall

Happy Indigenous People’s Heritage Month from
Code Nation!

The month of November marks Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month also knownNative American Heritage Month! There are over 9 million Native Americans and Native Alaskans living in the United States today across over 570 federally recognized tribes and villages.

Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month is a time to recognize and honor the many diverse cultures, histories, and experiences of Indigenous people. At Code Nation, we celebrate our students, families, volunteers, and staff who are part of the Indigenous community. And while we recognize that there’s still a lot of work to be done to support these communities, we also celebrate Indigenous peoples who have paved a pathway to a career in tech!

Other Ways You Can Celebrate and Learn!

Want to keep learning? Here are some resources that include articles, video listings, documentaries, and podcasts!

  • NPR is celebrating by highlighting different Indigenous stories and culture throughout the public media sphere. Tiny Desk will be featuring Indigenous artists like William Prince, Ya Tseen and Raye Zaragoza. Celebrate with us by listening to these podcasts, Tiny Desk Concerts and reading through our resource list. This blog post will continue to be updated throughout November, so be sure to bookmark it!
  • About to do some shopping? Check out this article from Good Housekeeping that highlights 20 different Indigenous and Native-Owned Businesses you can support!
  • Just like there are many coding languages, there are over 150 Native North American languages still spoken today, this article on Babbel Magazine does a great job detailing the history and complexity of Indigenous languages in North America.
  • Cultural Survival has curated numerous publications, podcasts, films, chefs and foods, businesses, non-profits, museums, and more! Check it out here!
